After Hiring A Roofing Contractor Tips

lienloanblog2

You have dotted your ‘i’s and crossed your ‘t’s and have found the right roofing contractor to undertake your project. The rest of the process should be smooth and painless, at least one expects it to be, but that’s not always the case. We have put together a few tips, to help you prevent potential issues.   You can also use these tips with other large home improvement projects.

1. Protect Your Investment

To prevent unscrupulous contractors from getting your money, don’t pay the entire amount of your new roof upfront. It’s a usual and known practice for home improvement contractors to require a payment schedule that matches the work, or a good faith deposit.  This generally applies to all large home improvement projects as well.

The PACE program comes with standard consumer protections to better guard homeowners from contractor-related disputes. For example, in Florida and California, a contractor will not be paid until the homeowner signs a project completion certificate that confirms the job was in fact completed and it was well done.

2. Confirm Before the Work Begins

  • If the project is the result of an insurance claim, confirm with your insurance company that you’ve got approval before work begins
  • Ask your contractor if you need to get a permit. If so, confirm who’s responsible for obtaining the permit
  • Make sure the contractor’s employees are covered by worker’s compensation

3. Agree on a Completion Date

Replacing or repairing your roof will likely impact your day-to-day activities and way of living. Be sure to decide on a completion date prior to starting the project to plan and prepare accordingly.

4. Ask & Review Updated Estimates

It’s not uncommon for a project to change as a result of unexpected repairs or price increases on roofing materials. If this is to be the case, your contractor will modify their original estimate, known as a “change-order.” Before you agree to the change-order, ask for documentation to review what has changed and don’t sign anything if it doesn’t look right. Confirm that the changes are convincing and within your budget before the contractor proceeds.

Need financing for your roofing project?

The Property Assessed Clean Energy (“PACE”) program offers 100% financing, with zero-money upfront and a fixed interest rate for up to 25- years. Plus, your FICO score does not impact your eligibility.
